The roof of a church in northern Mexico collapses during a mass: 30 people are trapped

The roof of a church in the north of Mexico It collapsed during a church service on Sunday, prompting rescuers to quickly mobilize to search for about 30 people believed to be trapped, authorities reported.

About 100 people were in the temple when the roof collapsed and about 30 are still inside, Tamaulipas state police said. Authorities did not say whether there were any deaths.

The bishop José Armando Álvarezof the diocese of Tampico, indicated that the roof collapsed while parishioners were taking communion at the Church of the Holy Cross in Ciudad Madero, located next to the city of Tampicoon the coast of Gulf of Mexico.

National Guard Unitsthe State Police, state Civil Protection and the Red Cross are on site looking for possible victims, Tamaulipas police said.

Photographs published by local media showed a concrete and brick structure with parts of the roof almost falling to the ground.

“At this moment, the necessary work is being carried out to remove the people who are still under the rubble”Álvarez declared in a recorded message. “Today we are living in a very difficult time”.
