Hamas attacks: second Frenchman killed in tragedy, Quai d’Orsay reports

A second Frenchman has died in a Hamas attack on Israel, the French Foreign Ministry said on Monday.

“France regrets the tragic death of the second French citizen who was a victim of terrorist attacks carried out by Hamas against Israel,” spokeswoman Anne-Claire Legendre said in a statement. “We continue to take steps to clarify the situation of our stranded citizens,” she added.

In a separate statement, a French lawmaker said Monday that “at least eight French people are missing, killed or taken hostage by Hamas.”

Deputy for French People Abroad Meyer Habib (right), whose constituency includes Israel, previously indicated that among the missing Frenchmen would be Avidan T., 26, a young Frenchman from Bordeaux (southwest) living in Israel. become hostage to the Palestinian Islamist movement.

“I have just spoken in detail with his father, a doctor: he has just confirmed to me, as we feared, that Avidan (…) is indeed taken hostage by Hamas,” the parliamentarian wrote in a message published on the social network X. ( formerly Twitter).

A call for vigilance to the French in Israel

On Sunday, Meyer Habib noted that Avidan was “probably kidnapped in southern Israel by Hamas” while attending a rave party near the Gaza border that was targeted by attackers. Up to 250 people attending the music festival were killed.

On Sunday evening, the Quai d’Orsay announced that a French woman had been killed in Israel after a Hamas attack, and said that several citizens had not yet been located.

On Monday, he indicated that “about 62,000 French citizens are registered at the Consulate General in Tel Aviv and 25,000 are registered at our Consulate General in Jerusalem.” In addition, “there are a lot of French people passing through there at the moment.”

The ministry also reiterates its call on “French people currently in Israel to comply with the instructions of extreme vigilance issued by our team at the French Embassy in Tel Aviv, the Consulate General in Jerusalem and the Israeli authorities.”
