NATO countries tell Israel it has the right to defend itself “with proportionality”

The countries of NATO This Thursday they expressed their solidarity with Israel and stressed that it has the right to defend itself against terrorist attacks by the Islamic movement Hamas “with proportionality”.

Alliance defense ministers heard first-hand information about the situation from their Israeli counterpart, Yoav Galantewho participated via videoconference in the meeting they have been holding since Wednesday in Brussels.

In a statement after the virtual meeting, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenbergmade clear the Atlantic Alliance’s condemnation “in the strongest possible terms” of the “horrific” terrorist attacks committed by Hamas in Israel since last weekend.

Gallant informed Allied ministers of “the atrocities perpetrated by Hamas against Israeli civilians and citizens of several NATO allies”, while Stoltenberg declared that “Israel is not alone.”

The allies expressed their solidarity with Israel, making clear that “it has the right to proportionately defend itself against these unjustifiable acts of terror”.

They also called on Hamas to “immediately” release all hostages and “protect civilians to the fullest.”

Allies also stressed that “no nation or organization should attempt to take advantage of or worsen the situation.”

Furthermore, several NATO countries have indicated that they are providing practical support to Israel in its response to the situation.
