Strasbourg: 13 demonstrators arrested during rally in support of Palestinians

The rally took place despite the ban. Thirteen people were arrested Friday evening in Strasbourg during a demonstration in support of Palestinians, the Bas-Rhin prefecture said. “National police have arrested 13 people, including the organizer of the demonstration, who will be prosecuted,” the prefecture said on X (formerly Twitter).

About 300 people gathered late in the day in the city center, waving Palestinian flags and banners, near Kléber Square, which was closed by police. “Palestine will live, Palestine will win,” “We are all Palestinians,” the demonstrators chanted, in particular.

The meeting was dispersed by police using tear gas. According to a trade union source, a police officer was injured.

“Provocation”

The prefect of the Lower Rhine, Josiane Chevalier, issued an order on Thursday to ban the gathering, taking into account, in particular, that such a demonstration could be “perceived by part of the population, in particular the Jewish community, as a provocation or support (of) terrorist activities.”

On Thursday, Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin ordered a ban on “pro-Palestinian demonstrations as they may cause disturbances to public order,” adding that “the organization of these prohibited demonstrations (should) lead to arrests.”

Despite everything, meetings took place, especially in Paris and Lille. At least ten demonstrators were arrested in the capital and the same number in Lille.
