Hurricane Norma LIVE: Follow the path of the dangerous cyclone here; When and where will it reach the mainland?

Hurricane Norma has strengthened in recent hours and is close to becoming a Category 2 hurricane, causing intense rain in the states of Colima, Guerrero, Jalisco and Michoacán, in the Pacific Ocean. Mexico, as well as strong winds and high waves on its coasts, Mexico’s National Meteorological Service (SMN) reported this Wednesday. In a statement, the SMN indicated that at 21:00 (03:00 GMT), Norma remained in category 1 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, although with maximum sustained winds of 150 kilometers per hour (km/h), that is, close to those in the category 2, which range from 154 to 177 km/h.

“Norma has gusts of 185 km/h and was located 485 kilometers (km) southwest of Manzanillo, Colimaand 750 km south-southeast of Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Southand is moving north at 13 km/h, towards Baja California Sul“, noted the SMN.

The report indicated that during the next few hours, Norma’s cloud bands will cause occasional heavy rainfall (75 to 150 millimeters [mm]) in the regions of Colima, Guerrero, Jalisco and Michoacán, wind gusts of 60 to 80 km/h, possible formation of waterspouts and waves 2 to 4 meters high in its coastal areas. Additionally, very heavy rainfall (50 to 75 mm) is expected in Nayarit.

“The advance of the system increases the probability of rain and showers in the Baja California Peninsula and in the north and center of the country”noted the Mexican Meteorological Service.

According to predictions, Norma could strengthen into a Category 3 hurricane on Thursday and make landfall on Saturday.

“Precipitation can be caused by electric shocks and generate landslides, increased levels of rivers and streams, overflows and floods in low-lying areas of the mentioned statesTherefore, the population is urged to pay attention to warnings from the SMN and follow the instructions of the Civil Protection authorities”, concludes the report.

Norma arrives after the double blow of cyclones Lidia and Max last week, when they left five dead in total, one in Nayarittwo in Jalisco and two in Warrior.

What is more It is the fourteenth named cyclone of this season in the Pacificwhere Adrian, Beatriz, Calvin, Dora, Eugene, Fernanda, Greg, Hilary, Irwin, Jova, Kenneth, Lidia and Max were trained.

Of them, the most damaging was Hilary, who in August left four dead in the states of Baja California, Baja California Sur and Sinaloaall in northern Mexico.

The Government of Mexico predicted in May the formation of up to 38 named cyclones in the 2023 seasonof which five could reach the country.

Of this number, between 16 and 22 systems could occur in the Pacific Ocean and between 10 and 16 in the Atlantic.
