War between Israel and Hamas: a demonstration in support of Gaza is authorized this Sunday in Paris

The rally planned for Sunday afternoon on the Place de la République in Paris, following a collective call to demand an end to Israeli military operations in Gaza, can be held, police headquarters assured this Saturday, warning that “no extremes will be tolerated.”

Following October 7 and the deadly attack by the Palestinian Islamist Hamas movement from the Gaza Strip, which killed some 1,400 people in Israel and was followed by incessant Israeli bombing in response, a bloody war broke out, killing several thousand people, including many civilians.

Although they have been systematically banned since the Hamas attack, the first demonstration in support of the people of Gaza was authorized on Thursday evening in the capital by the Paris administrative court. The President of the Republic justified these bans by the need to maintain a “period of decency” after the attack by the Islamist group.

However, on Wednesday the Council of State reminded the government that pro-Palestinian demonstrations cannot be systematically banned and that only prefects should assess whether there is a local risk of disruption to public order.

Condemnation of Hamas attacks

“Calls for demonstrations tomorrow (Sunday) condemn the terrorist attacks carried out by Hamas. Thus, the meeting announced at Republic Square can take place,” police headquarters said.

“A security system will be put in place to monitor the event and ensure it takes place in good conditions. No excesses are acceptable,” she added.

The National Collective for a Just and Lasting Peace between Palestinians and Israelis, which brings together about forty left-wing organizations including the LFI party, the Attac movement and the CGT and Solidaires unions, called for rallies across France on Sunday.
