Participation in Argentine elections is the lowest since the return to democracy

in the general elections, five points more than the participation in the August primaries, official sources reported.

The general secretary of the Presidency, Julio Vitobello, appeared after the closing of polling stations in Argentina, scheduled for 6:00 pm (9:00 pm GMT), although he informed that “There are still schools where they vote, so this percentage could be high”.

The highest participation was in 1983, in the first democratic elections after the dictatorship (1976-1983)when 85.61% went to the polls to give victory to the radical candidate Raúl Alfonsín.

Around 35.4 million Argentines were called this Sunday to elect president and vice-presidentand also renew 130 of the 257 seats in the Chamber of Deputies and 24 of the 72 in the Senate, and appoint 43 Argentine representatives to the Mercosur Parliament (Parlasul, the legislative body of the bloc formed by Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay).

Also to choose positions in the provinces of Buenos Aires, Catamarca, Entre Ríos and Autonomous City of Buenos Aireswho decided not to separate their elections from national ones, as the other districts did.
