Israeli president says conflict in Gaza “is not a war between Jews and Muslims”

The President of Israel, Isaac Herzog, warned this Thursday that the current conflict between his country and the Palestinian Islamic group Hamas is not “a war between Jews and Muslims”, in a meeting with Bedouin leaders in the Negev desert.

According to a statement from his spokesman, Herzog traveled today to Rahat, in the Negev, where he met with Bedouin leaders and families of hostages kidnapped by Hamas during the October 7 attack on Israeli territory.

“We came here to say that we deeply share the pain of the entire Arab-Israeli population and Bedouin society in particular,” said Herzog, who recalled that members of that community died in the attack by the Palestinian group.

He stressed that the current war is a dispute between “people who seek to bring light and people who seek to bring darkness, between good and evil”.

“We will continue to live together and it is important for me to communicate to the entire Arab society in Israel the responsibility shown by this community in these difficult days”, said Herzog, who emphasized that this “is not a political battle”, but rather about ability to live in peace in the Middle East and not in a region stained with blood and war.

According to Bedouin sources, around twenty members of their community died in the Hamas attack on October 7 in Israel, which left around 1,400 dead and more than 200 hostages who were taken to Gaza.

The Bedouins, mostly Muslims, represent around 3% of Israel’s population and live in different parts of the country, especially in the Negev desert.
