US military strikes two Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps installations in Syria

“These self-defense and precision strikes are in response to a series of ongoing and largely unsuccessful attacks on U.S. personnel in Iraq and Syria by Iranian-backed militias” since Oct. 17, U.S. Secretary Lloyd Austin said in a press release. The Pentagon announced the two operations after President Joe Biden sent a message to Iran’s top leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warning against any attacks on American troops that threaten to widen the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas. Earlier on Thursday, the Pentagon said that since the beginning of the month, US troops and their allies have been the target of at least 16 drone and missile attacks (12 in Iraq and four in Syria).

“These targeted strikes in self-defense (…) are separate and distinct from the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas and do not represent a change in our approach” to that war, Lloyd Austin insisted.
