Rhodes: 400 angry migrants block island port for four hours

They resist. About 400 migrants and refugees demonstrated at the port of Greece’s Rhodes island on Sunday, disrupting traffic for at least four hours and demanding their immediate transfer to other parts of the country, the coast guard said.

Migrants prevented one vessel, the Nissos Chios, from leaving and another from docking. Most of them arrived in Greece after being rescued during a dangerous crossing of the Mediterranean Sea. These migrants were transported to Rhodes to have their files processed.

According to the coast guard, they demanded that the Nissos Chios be boarded and immediately transferred from that island to more suitable reception facilities or to mainland Greece.

Since the beginning of the year, about 11 thousand migrants have arrived.

Port police negotiated with the migrants for four hours. Finally, the Nissos Chios left the port without migrants on board, Greek public radio and television ERT reported.

Sources in the Greek Ministry of Migration assured that they have allocated as many places in their reception centers as necessary to register and accommodate all migrants on the island, while Rhodes does not have its own accommodation structures. According to these sources, “transfers from the island are organized regularly” under the control of the police and coast guard.

According to official data, 10,790 migrants and refugees arrived in Greece in the first eight months of 2023, double the 5,216 registered in the same period last year.
