Bukele calls for a state of emergency in El Salvador due to tropical depression 19-E: classes are suspended and shelters enabled

Previously, Civil Protection declared an orange alert (level three of four) along the entire Pacific Ocean coast and in the capital.

The orange alert was established because “the risk level increases to a 75% probability of causing serious damage”, informed Civil Protection.

Tropical depression 19-E is currently in the Pacific Ocean moving at 4 km/hour and a projected trajectory that will impact the coast of The Savior between Monday and Tuesday.

“Tropical storm conditions may be possible Tuesday through Wednesday along portions of the coast of The Savior”, indicated the forecasts.

They also point out that “Heavy rainfall is expected from the tropical depression (which) will produce rapid flooding in urban areas, along with landslides in high-lying areas of the Pacific coast of Central America.”

The US National Hurricane Center warned of waves and surges along the Pacific coast that “could endanger lives.”

The Ministry of Education of El Salvador decreed the suspension of “academic activities” both on the coast and in the metropolitan region of the capital.

Also Emergency systems were placed on alert regarding the need for possible actions, as well as the preparation of shelters.said Civil Protection.

“Artisanal, industrial and sporting fishing, as well as recreational activities in rivers, beaches and lakes are temporarily suspended, due to the combination of this system with the presence of spring tides”, warned the Minister of the Environment through X, Fernando López.

According to the minister, sustained winds of 55 km/hour are expected.
