Israel: What do we know about the release of Ori Megidish, an IDF soldier taken hostage by Hamas

“She came home.” The Israeli army announced on Monday the release of Ori Megidish, a soldier held by the Islamist Hamas movement in the Gaza Strip after an October 7 attack. His release came after a ground operation carried out by the IDF and Israel’s internal intelligence service (Shin Bet) on the night of Sunday to Monday. This is the fifth Israeli hostage to be released since the war began.

Who is Ori Megidish?

18-year-old Ori Megidish is a soldier in the Israeli army. She is from Kiryat Gat, a city located about twenty kilometers from the border with the Gaza Strip. The young woman was at the Nahal Oz military base, south of the border, where she was serving as a guard, when she was kidnapped by Hamas on October 7, according to the New York Times. She could also work as a field observer responsible for monitoring threats along the border with the Gaza Strip, the American newspaper specifies.

She was rescued between Sunday evening and Monday morning during the military incursion into Gaza, military spokesman Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus confirmed. The soldier did not specify where exactly she was detained. Before her release, the young woman allegedly provided Israeli security services with accurate information about her captivity. She would be able to remember everything she saw in the Gaza Strip, which could be useful in future operations, added Daniel Hagari, another Israeli army spokesman to The Times of Israel.

What condition is she in?

Ori Megidish underwent a medical examination and “feels well,” the army assured, without going into details. Her homecoming was celebrated with joy on Monday evening. Video posted on social media shows her hugging her grandmother as the shophar, a Jewish ceremonial horn, sounds.

A crowd also gathered outside his home to celebrate his return with songs and fireworks. “It’s like a new birth,” said the family’s neighbor, Itamar Trobek, as quoted by the Jerusalem Post. “We are very happy. We saw the family, they were not the same as yesterday. We prayed a lot,” he said.

What is the official reaction?

Israeli President Isaac Herzog said he was “touched that the soldier returned home to her loving family after the daring operation carried out by the IDF and Shin Bet.”

Before congratulating the Israeli forces: “Our security forces operate 24 hours a day in the Gaza Strip, the north, the West Bank and everywhere, on land, in the air and at sea, with endless dedication, risking their lives. with a sense of mission and love for the people and country.”

It’s the same story with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who also at X welcomed the ground military operation carried out by the IDF.

“Welcome home, Uri. “I congratulate the Shin Bet and the Israeli military on this important and exciting achievement, an achievement that expresses our commitment to the release of all abductees,” he stressed.
