War in Israel: Hamas says it will release ‘a certain number’ of foreign hostages ‘in the coming days’

The end of a nightmare for some hostages? A spokesman for Hamas’ military arm said Tuesday that the Palestinian movement would release “in the coming days” foreign hostages among those it has held in the Gaza Strip since the Oct. 7 attack on Israeli territory. “We have informed the mediators that we will release a number of foreigners in the coming days,” Abu Obeida, a spokesman for the Palestinian movement’s military wing, said in a video broadcast by Hamas media.

The Israeli army says Hamas is holding at least 240 hostages, Israelis with dual citizenship and foreigners kidnapped during the Oct. 7 attack, which authorities say killed more than 1,400 people, most of them civilians. Hamas says Israeli bombings have killed more than 8,500 people, mostly civilians.

“The Graveyard and the Mire”

The spokesman also denied reports that an Israeli soldier whom the army announced on Monday had been released in the Gaza Strip had been detained by his movement. “We deny that the enemy managed to free any of Al-Qassam’s hostages,” he said.

Abu Obeida also warned Israel on Tuesday that the Gaza Strip would become a “graveyard and quagmire” for its soldiers and vowed to defeat Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, “which would mean the end of his political career.”

He also said the militants had “killed and wounded a large number of soldiers” involved in Israeli ground incursions, which have become more frequent since October 27. For its part, the Israeli army announced on Tuesday that two of its soldiers “fell in fighting in the northern Gaza Strip,” hours after reporting “heavy fighting” with Hamas in the strip.
