Nepal: 5.6 magnitude earthquake in the west of that country leaves more than 60 dead

More than 60 people died in the west Nepal by a 5.6 magnitude earthquake that struck Friday night, local authorities said Saturday morning.

The earthquake shook two remote districts in the west of this country, in the Himalayas, and, according to the United States Geological Survey, was located at a depth of just 18 kilometers.

Mud houses collapsed or were badly damaged and survivors fled to safety outside where the sirens of emergency vehicles could be heard.

The shock was felt in India’s capital, New Delhilocated almost 500 kilometers from the epicenter.

Rukum West district police chief Namraj Bhattarai told AFP that at least 36 people were killed and 85 injured in his district.

The head of neighboring Jajarkot district, Suresh Sunar, told AFP that in that area “26 people died and many were injured.” “It’s still night and it’s difficult to get all the information”he added. “The balance may increase”he warned.

Mobilization of security forces

The government mobilized security forces to help with rescue efforts. Nepalese Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal expressed “its deep regret for the human and physical damage caused by the earthquake”.

The earthquake destroyed or damaged almost 8,000 schools, leaving almost a million children without classes. It also destroyed hundreds of monuments and royal palaces, including UNESCO World Heritage sites in the Kathmandu Valley, dealing a severe blow to tourism.

It is estimated that economic losses resulting from the disaster were 7 billion dollars. Additionally, in November 2022, six people died in another 5.6 magnitude earthquake in Doti district, near Jajarkot.
