Reaction after ambulance explosion
The UN chief said he was “horrified” by the strike, adding that the conflict between Israel and Hamas must “stop.” “The images of bodies strewn on the street in front of the hospital are heartbreaking,” Antonio Guterres added in a statement.
The head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, is also “deeply shocked.” He reminded that “patients, caregivers, facilities and ambulances must be protected at all times.”
Fatal strike on ambulance
The Israeli army has admitted targeting an ambulance near Gaza’s main hospital, Al-Chifa, because it said Hamas members were in the vehicle. This claim has been refuted by the Palestinian Islamist movement, which has been classified as a “terrorist organization” by Israel, the United States and the European Union. The strike killed 15 people and wounded 60, including civilians in front of the hospital, according to the Hamas Health Ministry and the Palestinian Red Crescent. They said the ambulance was part of a convoy transporting several wounded people to Egypt.
An AFP correspondent saw several bodies and injured people near the damaged ambulance.
Israel rejects humanitarian pause in Gaza
After meeting with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Friday in Tel Aviv, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected the idea of a “temporary truce” without the release of hostages held by Hamas, who number at least 240.
However, according to a senior White House official, releasing the hostages “will require a very significant pause in the conflict.” On Friday evening he said “very serious discussions” were ongoing but “no agreement has been reached at this time.”
