‘There will be no occupation in Gaza,’ senior Israeli official says

“Israel will not reoccupy the Gaza Strip,” Ron Dermer, Israel’s minister of strategic affairs, said in an interview with US channel MSNBC on Tuesday evening.

“We (Israel, editor’s note) completely withdrew from Gaza 17 years ago and restored a terrorist state. We can’t repeat this, that’s obvious. Once Hamas is no longer in power and its infrastructure has been dismantled, Israel will have to bear overall responsibility for security for an indefinite period of time,” said Ron Dermer, who is an observer in the Israeli war cabinet. When asked how this responsibility would be organized, the latter admitted that the question remains open, but confirmed “that it will not be an occupation.” The comments from Israel’s former ambassador to the United States, who is close to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, came as Washington said it opposed Israel’s new long-term occupation of Gaza.
