General Sviridov joins a long list of Russian officials and oligarchs who have died under mysterious circumstances since the start of the war in Ukraine. The former commander of the 6th Air Defense Army of the Russian Federation, Lieutenant General Vladimir Sviridov, was found dead last Wednesday in a house in the village of Andzhievsky in southern Russia, a number of Russian media reported, including RIA Novosti.
The lifeless body of a woman who could have been his wife was also found next to him. They had been dead for about a week when they were discovered.
The circumstances of their deaths are unclear. According to RIA Novosti, there are no signs of violent death on the bodies.
68-year-old Vladimir Sviridov graduated from the Higher Military Aviation School of Air Defense Pilots and Navigators in Stavropol, the Russian media outlet Meduza reports. In 2005, he was appointed commander of the 6th Air Defense Army and remained in this position until 2009.
Criticism of the army
During his career, he enjoyed fame, including receiving the Order of the Red Star “For Military Merit” and the title “Honored Military Pilot of the Russian Federation,” Kommersant reports.
But he could also be critical, emphasizes the New York Post, which recalls that in a 2007 interview with the Russian magazine Take-Off, he complained about the training of Russian army pilots.
“A pilot must fly approximately 100 hours per year to be fully combat-ready. However, this is not yet the case; the average flight duration in the army is now 25-30 hours,” he said.
In another interview, Sviridov said: “We are forced to appoint officers who are not fully trained, because there are no better ones.” »
