Rosalynn Carter, former First Lady of the United States, has died at the age of 96.

Former first lady Rosalynn Carter, 96, died Sunday at her home with her husband Jimmy Carter, who was also at the end of his life, by his side, the Carter Center said.

Under palliative care since Friday, “she passed away peacefully with her family at her side” at the couple’s home in Plains, Georgia, the southeastern United States, the foundation that manages Jimmy Carter’s image and political legacy said in a news release.

Her husband Jimmy Carter is in poor health.

“Rosalyn has been my equal partner in everything I have accomplished,” the Democratic former president was quoted as saying. The 99-year-old former president and Nobel Peace Prize winner has been receiving palliative care since February.

In the White House for one term from 1977 to 1981, he is the oldest former American president in history. Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter married in 1946.

The former president was spotted at the Plains festival the weekend before his birthday with his wife Rosalyn, who suffers from neurodegenerative disorders. The architect of the Camp David Accords, which led to the Israeli-Egyptian peace treaty in March 1979, Jimmy Carter occupies a special place in the American political landscape, marred by the American hostage crisis in Iran in 1979-1980.
