European Union says goodbye to Kissinger, remembering his influence on international politics

The presidents of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the European Council, Charles Michel, said goodbye to the former US Secretary of State this Thursday. Henry Kissingerdied aged 100, remembered for his influence on international politics.

On the same platform, the President of the European Council, Carlos Michel, called Kissinger “a kind human being and a brilliant mind who, over a hundred years, shaped the fate of some of the most important events of the century.”

The legendary and controversial diplomat remained active until the end, despite his advanced age. Last July, he visited China, now celebrating its 100th anniversary, to meet with the country’s president, Xi Jinping, and senior officials.

It has also been common to see his opinions on current issues in the media, such as the war in Ukraine or the risks of artificial intelligence.

He received the Nobel Peace Prize along with his Vietnamese counterpart Le Duc Thuo for secret negotiations to end the Vietnam War and normalized diplomatic relations between the United States and China during Richard Nixon’s presidency (1969-1974).

However, he will also be remembered for his support for dictatorships such as those in Argentina and Spain, his role in Operation Condor to repress left-wing Latin American opponents or his support for the coup d’état against Salvador Allende in Chile.
