Pandora Papers: AMLO asks to investigate businessmen and officials who hid assets in tax havens

The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, asked this Monday to investigate the little more than 3,000 Mexicans who allegedly hid assets in tax havens to evade taxes, including one of his ministers.

Among those identified are three well-known millionaires whose fortunes total about $ 30 billion, according to Pandora Papers, a global investigation coordinated by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ).

They are Germán Larrea, María Asunción Aramburuzabala and Olegario Vázquez Aldir, said the newspaper El País of Spain, who participated in the work.

Larrea is the owner of the largest mining company in Mexico, while Aramburuzabala is the heir to the Modelo brewery and Vázquez Aldir leads the Angeles Business Group.

According to the report, only 25 of the aforementioned Mexicans moved some 1,270 million dollars to “offshore” jurisdictions, for the purchase of luxury goods.

The list also includes politicians linked to Lopez Obrador: Jorge Arganis, Minister of Communications and Transportation; Senator Armando Guadiana; Julio Scherer, former legal counsel to the Presidency, and Julia Abdala, wife of Manuel Bartlett, head of the state Federal Electricity Commission (CFE).

López Obrador criticized the press for focusing on politicians linked to him.

“There are 3,000 and three come out. Even in the newspapers and in the media where the owners are on the lists, they get only three ”, said.

Despite this, the president maintained that all should be investigated and cited explanations from Minister Arganis, who admitted to having invested 3 million pesos (150,000 dollars) in 1998 in a Stanford fund, which he says he lost in the middle of the fraud scandal. of that American firm.
