US aid to Ukraine is under serious threat. Despite President Joe Biden’s efforts, congressional Republicans late last week blocked a budget bill that included more than $50 billion in additional security aid for that country (106 including funds for Israel). Evidence that opposition to war financing—long a political rallying point for the far right—is gaining traction among Republicans.

The position of Trump’s party, which is the ultra-favorite to face Biden eleven months into the presidential election, is clear: there can be no question of continued funding of the Ukrainian ally until Democrats agree to a radical overhaul of US immigration laws. “Why do we need to protect Ukraine’s borders if we don’t protect our own from immigration? – they ask essentially. All Republicans supported this somewhat specious argument, even those who had previously always voted for aid to Ukraine.
