The first cardinal tried in the history of the Vatican could end up in prison for 7 years

Although the property was later sold for 214 million euros, it left a huge hole in the Vatican coffers of at least 139 million euros.

Furthermore, during the process other financial crimes allegedly committed by Becciu emerged, such as donations of 125 thousand euros that were deposited into the account of an association, linked to Cáritas de Ozieri, which at the time was chaired by one of his brothers.

A document signed by Pope Francis in April 2021 allowed Becciu to be taken to the civil courts, where the case against him began in July 2021. Now, the court presided over by judge Giuseppe Pignatone decides on the sentence against him. .

Along with him, Vatican officials René Brülhart, Tommaso Di Ruzza and Fabrizio Tirabassi, as well as Father Mauro Carlino, Becciu’s former secretary, were accused in the case.

Also awaiting sentencing are financial brokers and mediators, accused of profiting from and defrauding the Holy See, Enrico Crasso, Raffaele Mincione, Cecilia Marogna, Gianluigi Torzi and Nicola Squillace.

Among these surnames, Cecilia Marogna stands out, defined by Vatican prosecutor Alessandro Diddi as “the cardinal’s lady” and to whom Becciu paid 575 thousand euros for allegedly helping the Holy See free the nun, after four years of captivity.
