War between Israel and Hamas: mother and daughter killed by Israeli soldier in Gaza Catholic parish

The parish assures that there were no militants within its walls. A mother and her daughter were killed Saturday by an Israeli soldier on the grounds of Gaza City’s only Catholic church, the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem said.

“Today, around noon, an Israeli army sniper killed two Christian women in the Holy Family parish in Gaza, where most Christian families in Gaza have taken refuge since the beginning of the war” between Israel and the Palestinian Hamas movement, the Patriarchate stated in a press release. “Nahida and her daughter Samar were shot dead as they walked towards the sisters’ monastery,” the report said, without specifying the age of the victims.

According to the same source, seven more people were injured by gunfire while trying to protect themselves from gunfire in the parish. The Israeli military did not immediately comment on the reports. “They were shot in cold blood,” the Patriarchate accused, although “there is not a single fighter within the walls of the parish.”

Community of about a hundred people

The Catholic community in the Gaza Strip, whose Palestinian residents are overwhelmingly Muslim, has 135 members out of 1,000 Christians, most of them Orthodox.

On October 7, war broke out between Israel and Hamas, sparked by a bloody attack by the Palestinian Islamist movement on Israeli soil from the Gaza Strip. According to Israel, the attack killed 1,139 people, mostly civilians. In response, Israel promised to “destroy” Hamas by shelling Palestinian territory and conducting a large-scale ground operation. The Hamas health ministry said on Friday that Israeli bombings had killed 18,800 people, mostly civilians.
