Syria: Iranian Revolutionary Guard leader killed in Israeli strike

A general in the Revolutionary Guard, Iran’s ideological army, was killed in Syria in a strike blamed on Israel near Damascus, Iran’s official Irna news agency reported Monday. According to the agency, the general, one of the most experienced guard advisers in Syria, Razi Mousavi was killed “during the Zionist regime’s attack a few hours ago” on the Sayyida Zeinab area, south of Damascus. .

A little over a year ago, a colonel of the Revolutionary Guard was already killed near Damascus. The Islamic Republic is one of the main international backers of Hamas, whose Oct. 7 attack killed about 1,140 people, mostly civilians, in Israel, according to an Agence France-Presse tally based on the latest available official Israeli data.

“Resistance Logistics Manager”

In a press release, The Guardians introduced “Brigadier General Mousavi” as the “logistics manager for the resistance axis” (the armed groups fighting Israel, editor’s note) in Syria.

IRNA added that the man, an “associate” of General Qassem Soleimani, head of the Quds Force, an elite unit of the Revolutionary Guard and a key figure in the Islamic Republic in the Middle East, was killed in a US raid in Iraq in early 2020.

Israel rarely comments on its operations in Syria but says it wants to prevent Iran, its archenemy, from establishing itself on its doorstep. Asked Monday about Razi Moussavi’s death, Israeli army officials said they “do not comment on foreign media reports.”

In early December, Iran announced the death of two Guard officers as a result of Israeli airstrikes against Lebanese Hezbollah targets, backed by Tehran. In alliance with other pro-Iranian groups, the latter has been launching rockets towards northern Israel every day since October 7.
