War in Ukraine: the Ukrainian army retreated to the “outskirts of Marinka”, which Moscow claims

According to him, this information is not enough to “cause a public outcry.” Ukrainian army chief Valeriy Zaluzhny said on Tuesday that his troops had withdrawn to the “outskirts” of Marinka, a city in the east of the country that Moscow said it had captured the day before. “The fact that we have moved to the outskirts of Marinka and in some places have already gone beyond the boundaries of the populated area should not cause public indignation,” Valery Zaluzhny said at a press conference.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said in an interview with Vladimir Putin on Monday that the Russian army had “completely liberated” the city of Marinka near Donetsk. This claim was initially denied by the Ukrainian army. “The fight for Marinka continues,” said Alexander Chtupun, a Ukrainian army spokesman, adding that there were still Ukrainian soldiers in the city, which was “completely destroyed.”

Ukrainian stronghold since 2014.

Marinka has been turned into a stronghold by the Ukrainian army since 2014 and the start of the conflict with pro-Russian separatists led by Moscow, who captured, in particular, the city of Donetsk. According to Sergei Shoigu, Marinka is a “powerful fortified area connected by underground passages” that protect it from artillery and aviation attacks. “Thanks to the decisive actions of our soldiers, the fortress was breached,” he said. “The liberation of a populated area naturally reduces the defense capability of the Ukrainian armed forces and gives us additional opportunities to continue actions in this direction,” he added.

Vladimir Putin, for his part, welcomed the fact that the capture of Marinka keeps Ukrainian troops away from Donetsk, the regional capital under Russian control, which has been subject to regular Ukrainian bombing since 2014.

Russian troops have regained the initiative at the front after the failure of the Ukrainian counter-offensive, especially in the East. In particular, they have been trying for several months to encircle another stronghold – Avdievka, also in the east.
