VIDEO. Argentina: Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets against the “mega-decree” of Javier Miley

Thousands of Argentines took to the streets of Buenos Aires for the third demonstration in a week. On the sidelines of the demonstration, clashes occurred with the police. Demonstrators are protesting against the “mega-decree” of Javier Miley, who was elected head of the country a month ago. It involves massive deregulation of the economy and aims to change or eliminate more than 300 standards, in particular by removing rent and price controls on basic products, weakening worker protections and facilitating privatization.

“Our idea is (…) to achieve the greatest unity of the working class and all working sectors of the people until we defeat the Miley government and all its measures,” explains Néstor Pitrola, leader of the Workers’ Party. Outside the courthouse on Wednesday, demonstrators called by several unions, including the major central CGT, accompanied the unions’ filing of a lawsuit challenging the constitutional nature of the decree. The latter is due to come into force on Friday, December 29, but the parliament, where Javier Miley’s troops are in the minority, will have to consider it and may even cancel it.

On December 12, the president already announced a series of shock measures. In particular, the devaluation of the peso by more than 50% and the reduction of government subsidies for transport and energy.
