War in Ukraine: several air alerts, missiles flying towards Kyiv, the army reports

The Ukrainian army on Tuesday sounded an air raid alert across the country and warned that Russian bombers could launch missiles.

“Kyiv – stay in shelters. Many missiles are on course(to you),” the Ukrainian Air Force reported on Telegram.

“Missile danger in areas under air alert!” The threat of cruise missile launches from Tu-95MS aircraft. In total, 16 Tu-95MS strategic bombers are in the air,” the Air Force reported on Telegram.

A few hours earlier, the military warned that Russian strategic bombers were in the air.

After Russia received reports of takeoffs from Olenia (northwest) and Engels (southwest), several Tu-95MS aircraft ended up in Russian airspace, the Ukrainian military reported on Telegram.

Four Tu-22M3 bombers also left the Russian Chaikovka training ground near the border with Belarus.

Explosions in Kyiv

The Kyiv Air Force also reported on Friday the takeoff of the Tu-95, an aircraft developed back in the Soviet Union. That day, Moscow launched a series of attacks on several Ukrainian cities, including Kiev, which killed 39 people.

Explosions went off in Kyiv at around 2am local time on Tuesday (midnight GMT) as Ukraine tried to fend off a drone attack on its capital, officials said. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported explosions in the capital about an hour after the regional military administration reported the discovery of drones in the city’s airspace.

“Destroys of a drone are burning in the Desnyansky district (…),” the elected official wrote on Telegram, adding that emergency services were on the scene. The air raid alert came into force in the Kyiv, Chernigov, Cherkasy, Nikolaev and Kherson regions at 3:30 am local time (00:30 Moscow time).

According to the mayor of Nikolaev (south), the Air Force shot down drones in his city, and falling debris caused a fire. The air force said it shot down 35 Iranian-made Shahed drones launched by Moscow overnight.

Putin announced new strikes

Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed on Monday to “step up” Russian strikes on Ukraine in response to the Ukrainian army’s unprecedented bombing of the Russian city of Belgorod on Saturday that killed 25 people, including five children.

Moscow also launched strikes on Ukrainian cities on New Year’s Eve, and Kyiv reported a “record” number of drones launched by Russia.
