2024 US presidential election: After Colorado, Trump challenges his disqualification in Maine

Former US President Donald Trump on Tuesday appealed a decision to exclude him from the ballot in Maine’s Republican primary, with the latter taking such a measure ten months before the presidential election.

A week after a similar decision in Colorado, Maine on Thursday ruled that the Republican front-runner was “unfit to serve as president” because of the violent 2021 attack on the Capitol by his supporters fighting the Democratic primary. Joe Biden.

Donald Trump’s lawyers asked Maine courts Tuesday to overturn Democratic Maine Secretary of State Shanna Bellows’ decision, calling her a “biased leader” who “acted arbitrarily and capriciously.”

Maine, like the Colorado Supreme Court, upheld the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, which exempts those who participated in the “rebellion” from public liability.

On January 6, 2021, hundreds of Donald Trump supporters violently stormed the Capitol, the seat of Congress and the sanctuary of American democracy, in an attempt to stop the certification of Joe Biden’s victory.

In August, the former president was indicted on federal and Georgia charges in an attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

The historic decisions in Maine and Colorado at this stage only affect the Republican primaries held in those two states on March 5th. They will not be applied while legal proceedings to challenge them are ongoing. In various states across the country, several procedures have been launched to block the path of the big favorite in the Republican primaries. Michigan and Minnesota rejected them.

The shooter broke into the Supreme Court building

The move comes after a gunman stormed the U.S. Supreme Court building in Colorado, opened fire and caused extensive damage before being arrested, local police said Tuesday. Colorado police say no connection has been demonstrated between the shooting and the ruling against Donald Trump.

The events took place in Denver on the night from Monday to Tuesday. The man, whose identity has not been released, was involved in a car accident during which he pointed a gun at another driver.

He then shot through the window of the Supreme Court building, threatening an unarmed security guard. According to police, the suspect climbed to the sixth floor of the building, where he opened fire several times. About two hours later, he surrendered to law enforcement.

“There was significant and widespread damage to the building. The investigation is still ongoing, said police, who did not report any injuries. “This is not believed at this time to be related to previous threats against Colorado Supreme Court justices,” she added.
