China: At least 13 dead in school dormitory fire in Nanyang city

Thirteen people died after a fire broke out last night in a school dormitory in the city of Nanyang, in the henan province, central chinareported today in the local press of the Asian country.

The fire broke out on Friday night in Fangcheng County, Nanyang, local authorities reported today, state news agency Xinhua reported.

According to the release, the local fire department received an alert at around 11pm local time (3pm GMT) and responded to the dormitory of Yingcai School in Yanshanpu Village.

It should be noted that firefighters managed to extinguish the flames at around 11:38 pm local time (3:38 pm GMT).

In addition to the thirteen deaths, the fire left one injured person who is being treated in hospital, although there is no fear for his life.

Local authorities began an investigation to clarify the cause of the fire, the agency said, and according to the local newspaper Global Times, the school’s leaders were detained to give statements.
