Guterres reiterates at the UN that it is “unacceptable” for Israel to reject the two-state solution

The secretary general of UN, António Guterresrepeated this Tuesday that it is “unacceptable” what Israel refuses to accept the two-state solution, one Israeli and one Palestinian, and that is a position that “must be firmly rejected”.

This rejection – of Israel– and denying the Palestinian people the right to statehood will only indefinitely prolong a conflict that has become a major threat to global peace and security.”, said Guterres.

This right of Palestinians to a state “must be recognized by everyone”, emphasized Guterres.

Guterres’ intervention was followed by that of the Palestinian Foreign Minister, Riad Al-Malkiwhich stated that Israel cannot have any veto power to admit the Palestinian State as a full member of the UN (now only has observer status).

Al-Malki lamented that Israel does not see the Palestinian people.”as an empirical and political reality with which to coexist, but as a demographic threat that must be eliminated through death, displacement or subjugation”, but warned Israel against “illusion“that you can achieve peace as you continue”occupation and colonialism”.

Although the idea of two states is now at the center of the debate, the Israeli ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdantook the floor and did not make the slightest mention of the matter, choosing to attack Hamas already Will for its allegedly destabilizing role in the region.

The Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahuclearly rejected the two-state option, but Erdán did not want to enter that debate today, perhaps aware that the international community at large – including his most faithful ally, U.S– increasingly insist on this option as a way out of the conflict.

In this sense, the French Minister of Foreign Affairs, Stephane Séjournéwho also spoke before the Security Council today, also spoke in favor of the same two-state solution and warned against Israel’s attempts to conceive of such a future Palestinian state.

It is not up to Israel to decide the fate of the Palestinian population in Gaza, or where they should live on their land, it is up to the Palestinian authority”said Séjourné, who said he spoke like this“friend”of Israel and Palestine.
