War in Ukraine: two civilians shot dead during a raid on their village

Two Ukrainian civilians were shot dead in their village bordering Russia during an invasion by a group of Russian soldiers, local authorities said.

The attack took place in the Sumy region, in a five-kilometer zone near the border with Russia, whose residents Kyiv asked to evacuate.

“This morning, an enemy reconnaissance and sabotage group cruelly and cynically shot one of our brothers and one of our sisters,” the regional administration said in a statement. According to her, this happened in the village of Andreevka, 4 km from the border with the Kursk region of Russia.

Since the start of the war, 10,000 civilians have died.

In a separate statement, the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine said that the victims were a 54-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman, killed while traveling in a car. He posted a photo of what he said was their car, which showed the front and rear windows shattered.

Although infrequent, attacks of this type have occurred from time to time since the beginning of the war. On Saturday, Ukrainian authorities renewed their call for residents of these areas to leave their villages. “Russian terrorists continue to kill civilians. By leaving these dangerous areas, you will save your life,” said the governor of the Sumy region, Vladimir Artyukh.

In addition, three more civilians were killed in Russian attacks in the east and south of the country, local authorities said on Saturday. One person died from an explosive device fired by a drone in Berislav, on the Dnieper, in the Kherson region, two from artillery shelling in the Donetsk region (east).

Donetsk Governor Vadim Filashkin also said on Saturday that the bodies of five people killed during the Russian bombing of the village of New York two weeks ago had been recovered from the rubble.

Moscow has not commented but has denied attacks on civilians since the start of the war, despite extensive evidence to the contrary. According to the UN, at least 10,000 civilians have died in Ukraine since the start of the war.
