Canada announces $30 million in aid to Gaza after stopping its contribution to UNRWA

Canada announced this Tuesday that it will allocate 40 million Canadian dollars (30 million US dollars or 27.5 million euros) days after suspending its contributions to the United Nations Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA).

The money will be distributed between the United Nations World Food Program (AMP), Unicef, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), World Health Organization (WHO), the International Committee of the Red Cross and the United Nations Humanitarian Aid Coordination Office (THE TEA).

Canada’s Minister of International Development, Ahmed Hussenindicated this Tuesday that the funds made available will be used to “urgent needs” caused by humanitarian crisis who lives in Gaza strip by the Israeli offensive.

Hussen stated in a statement that Canada consider this “more help is needed, not less.”

“Consequently, we are responding with additional emergency funding so that our trusted and experienced humanitarian partners can continue to ensure this money reaches the most vulnerable in their time of need.”he added.

hussen was tasked with announcing last Friday that Canada will temporarily suspend contributions to UNRWA after Israel accuses a dozen of the agency’s 30,000 employees of being associated with the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7.

The decision of the Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeauto temporarily suspend funding to the main agency providing humanitarian aid to the Palestinian population was harshly criticized by experts, academics, activists and representatives of the Muslim community in Canada.

On Monday, the National Council of Canadian Muslimsthe main group representing the Muslim community in the country, abruptly canceled a meeting with Trudeau in protest against his government’s actions.

Canada He also said that he does not accept “the premise”of the genocide case presented by South Africa against Israel in International Court of Justice (ICJ) and refused to ask Israel to comply with the preliminary measures required by the court to protect Palestinians.
