“Cattle are being sacrificed once again”: why the EU-MERCOSUR agreement crystallizes passions

Stop or else? Discussions around a free trade agreement between the European Union (EU) and MERCOSUR, which began in 1999, continue to face obstacles but are now facing their final obstacle. A “deal” with this market, uniting Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay, was supposed to be announced in early December on the sidelines of COP 28, but the rise to power in Argentina of populist Javier Miley delayed the process. The new deadline was finally set for the end of February… in the middle of the Agricultural Exhibition in France.

Suffice it to say that due to the unprecedented mobilization of farmers in France, as well as in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, this hypothesis is under threat. Moreover, France, following farmers, is trying to condemn unfair competition from foreign products that do not meet our production standards.
