The war against Salvadoran gangs gave priority to the rights of “honest people”, according to Bukele

The president of The Savior, Nayib BukeleHe stated in a speech in which he proclaimed, without official data, his immediate re-election that his war against gangs gave priority to the rights of “honest people”.

In his speech, before hundreds of his followers in Historic Center of São Salvador, Bukele addressed a message of repudiation to his critics, including governments, international organizations and the press.

“We went from the most unsafe country in the world to the safest country in the entire Western Hemisphere, the safest country in the entire American continent, and what they said: it is a violation of human rights”Bukele said.

He added: “Whose human rights are they? Not honest people. Maybe we prioritized the rights of honest people over the rights of criminals, that’s the only thing we did and that’s what you call a violation of human rights.”

Bukele’s security strategy, which sustains his popularity, is mainly based on an emergency regime that suspends constitutional guarantees, such as the legal defense of detainees.

Since March 2022, when it was approved in Congress at the request of the Executive, there have been more than 76,000 arrests, which the Government says are only of gang members and collaborators.

This regime, expanded 22 times over 30 days, also left more than 6,000 reports of abuses, including arbitrary arrests and torture, in addition to around 220 deaths of detainees, according to humanitarian organizations.

“I ask these organizations, these governments of foreign nations, I ask these journalists: why do they want us to be killed, why do they want to see the blood of Salvadorans, why are they not happy that crime no longer occurs in our country? that flowed before?”he added Bukele.

In your opinion, the criticism you have received is due to the fact that “They are simply afraid of the power of example.”

“We, Salvadorans, own a very small country, a relatively poor country, a country that is still underdeveloped, but the Salvadorans “We set an example to the whole world that any problem can be solved if there is a desire to do so,” he emphasized.

Bukelejust two hours after the polls closed and without the votes having been counted at the polling stations, he was declared the winner with “more than 85% of the votes”.

If the data is confirmed, Bukele would be the first president since El Salvador left a long military dictatorship and entered democracy by being re-elected for an immediate second term, despite the constitutional prohibition.
