El Salvador: TSE announces final count of elections without conclusion of preliminary count due to failures

He Supreme Electoral Court (TSE) of The Savior will give rise to the final scrutiny of the presidential and legislative elections held on Sunday without having completed the preliminary process due to flaws in the processing and transmission of polling station minutes.

The president of the TSE, Dora Esmeralda Martinezreported this Monday on a national radio and television network that for the scrutiny of the legislative elections “all electoral packages will be opened“to count”meeting by meeting, vote by vote”, while in presidential elections this will be done in the case of minutes not transmitted.

He explained that, despite all the institutional efforts made, “It was not possible to complete the transmission of the minutes as expected and it was noted that some inconveniences made it difficult for the transmission to flow as planned.”.

Martínez explained that in the case of the presidential election, 6,015 minutes were received from the same number of vote collection tables, equivalent to 70.25% of the total, and 2,547 minutes were needed.

He noted that for the final ballot of the presidential election “The 6,015 minutes that were actually transmitted and that are in the TSE system will be taken as a basis, and with the 2,547 minutes that were not transmitted, the electoral packages will be opened to carry out the recount.”.

For the final ballot for the election of deputies to the legislative Assemblyhe indicated, “All election packages will be opened”, distributed across a total of 8,562 voting councils.

According to the electoral calendar, the final count should take place between February 6th and 15th.

Martínez thus responded to the serious and numerous allegations of irregularities in the process of transmitting preliminary results, made by members of opposition political parties, electoral experts and social media users.

The president of The Savior, Nayib Bukeletotaled 1,662,313 votes with 70.25% of the minutes processed in the preliminary examination of the TSE.

Behind Bukele, from the ruling party New ideas (NI), the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN, left) with 139,025 votes and the National Republican Alliance (Arena, on the right), with 122,926 votes.
