The OAS supports Petro amid tensions between the Government and the Supreme Court

O Organization of American States (OAS) this Thursday gave its support to the Colombian president, Gustavo Pedroin a context of increased tensions between the Government and the Supreme Court.

In a statement, the secretary general of OASled by Luis Almagrorejected the “attempts by different political actors”To damage the“democratic process in Colombia” and the “threats to interrupt Petro’s constitutional mandate”.

At the same time, the writing highlighted the “Vital importance”that a new prosecutor be appointed in the country to“provide constitutional and political security”.

O OAS General Secretariat requests that all state actors and institutions respect democratic principles and that constitutional governance is ensured for elected authorities”, highlighted the OAS.

The organization’s support for Petro comes amid strong tensions between the Government and the Supreme Court due to the election of a new attorney general and complaints from the president of an alleged Coup attempt.

None of the three candidates for Petro’s prosecutor received the necessary votes to be nominated, causing a group of protesters to attempt to enter the headquarters of the high court in Bogotá.
