Paraguay: evacuation due to alleged ammonia leak around a chicken factory

The surroundings of a chicken processing factory in the city Paraguayan of Capiatá (center) were evacuated this Saturday due to an alleged ammonia leak that occurred days after the death of a worker and 41 other people were affected by the explosion of a cylinder containing that gas in a sausage factory.

The mayor of Capiatá, Laura Gamarratold radio Ñandutí that the firefighters who went to the scene reported that “the situation is under control” and that company engineers are working inside the facilities.

“Practically, within a radius of 300 meters, all of them have already been evacuated“, declared the person in charge, who indicated that at this time “there were no injuries or anything to regret”.

Consulted by the NPY channel, police officer Gabriela Arce, from police station no. 4 in the San Miguel de Capiatá neighborhood, indicated that preliminary information points to a “supposed ammonia leak” inside the poultry establishment.

The spokesperson reported that the workers who were at the site “as soon as they smelled the smell, they immediately left the site”.

He highlighted that the possibility of a gas leak is being considered, although he admitted that this is information that must be confirmed by professionals.

Furthermore, he indicated that fire crews entered the premiseswhere numerous ambulances were transported.

The interruption of traffic between Capiatá and the city of San Lorenzo was also ordered.

In a statement, the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development recommended the evacuation of the affected area “within a radius of 500 meters around”, wear a double mask, protect your eyes from smoke, keep doors and windows closed and do not use air conditioning, in addition to avoiding the plant area.

The Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security also reported that “no workers affected by the situation were registered” and reported that it took “immediate measures” by sending its inspectors to the site.

This Wednesday, the explosion of an ammonia cylinder caused an emergency at the Ochsi sausage company factory, located in San Lorenzo (15 kilometers from Asunción), where one worker died and 41 suffered various injuries. The site remains closed while the corresponding investigations are carried out.
