Venezuelan-Iranian plane suspected of espionage leaves Buenos Aires bound for the United States

The plane of the Venezuelan airline Emtrasur Cargo who came to Argentina in June 2022 with Venezuelan and Iranian crew members suspected of espionage and who have since remained in custody in good air left this Monday morning towards U.Sin response to a confiscation order.

As confirmed to EFE by judicial and airport sources, the 747-300M Dreamliner cargo, which belonged to the Iranian company Mahan Air and currently belongs to Emtrasulsubsidiary of the Venezuelan state-owned company Conviasacompanies sanctioned by the US Treasury Department, departed at 01:30 local time (04:30 GMT) from good airin the city of Ezeiza.

The crew that arrived on the plane to Argentina on June 6, 2022, which was made up of five Iranians and fourteen Venezuelans, was initially detained by the courts and later released by the federal judge Frederico Villena due to lack of evidence of the crime of financing terrorist activities.

The plane had arrived Argentina in Mexico and after making a stopover in Venezuela. Two days later he left Argentina to refuel Uruguaybut had to go back to the airport Ezeiza because the neighboring country did not authorize their landing.

Upon returning to Ezeiza, the Argentine court ordered the ship to be immobilized and ordered that the plane’s 19 crew members could not leave the country. As the investigation progressed, the ship was left in good air but the crew was released.

The justification of the allegation by USA is that it was an Iranian entity sanctioned by the US Department of Commerce who transferred the plane – manufactured in the United States – to a third party, something prohibited precisely for the purposes of the sanction.

The decision to seize and hand over the detained plane was adopted by the Argentine Court in consideration of a treaty signed by Argentina and USAwhereby both countries “they pledged to provide mutual assistance,” which includes the “cooperation in the execution of requests for search, seizure and seizure”.

The Argentine court’s decision provoked a harsh reaction from the Venezuelan authorities, who demanded “the immediate return of the aircraft” on December 30 in a statement that stated that the treaty between Argentina and USA “cannot be applied to a third State because it would clearly violate the obligations assumed in multilateral agreements”, which establish “procedures to resolve this type of controversies”.

Before leaving the plane, a confusing episode occurred, when the second from the Embassy of Venezuela in good air violated the security of the plane Emtrasur Cargo when taking photos of him on February 6 accompanied by an employee of the National Civil Aviation Administration, For this reason, he was declared persona non grata and left the country within the next 48 hours.
