The President of the United States, Joe Bidenthis Tuesday condemned the “stupid” and “shameful” comment about the NATO what the former president did last Saturday donald trump (2017-2021), favorite to be Republican candidate in the November elections.

Last Saturday, Trump attacked NATO and said that would allow Russia to do whatever it wants, including attacking Alliance members that do not spend 2% of their GDP on defensethe objective established by the transatlantic organization and which around twenty members do not meet.

Biden referred to Trump’s comments with outrage: “Can you imagine a former president of the United States saying that? Everyone heard that. And the worst thing is that he is serious.”

Donald Trump sees NATO as a burden. When we look at NATO, we don’t see the alliance that protects America and the world. See some kind of fraud. He does not understand that NATO is based on fundamental principles of freedom, security and national sovereignty. For Tump, principles don’t matter. “Everything is transactional”, criticized the president.

Biden, who during his career, first in the Senate and then as vice president of Barack Obama (2009-2017), stood out for his support for NATO, promised that while he is in the White House, the United States will defend “every corner” of Alliance territory.

While governing the United States, Trump frequently criticized NATO and members such as Germany, accusing them of not paying enough for their own defense and relying on the US to protect them.

Furthermore, he openly questioned the principle of collective defense, established in article 5 of the Alliance’s founding treaty, which establishes that an attack on one member is an attack on the entire organization.
