The sudden death this Friday, February 16, at the age of 47, in his remote Arctic prison, of Alexei Navalny, Putin’s number one opponent, assassinating the regime with the help of his anti-corruption foundation, caused a huge shock. No doubt more abroad, in the West, than in Russia itself, where the activist, who certainly had many passionate supporters, has become almost invisible to the official media, especially since the beginning of the offensive in Ukraine.
His death, a month before Russia’s presidential elections, which, unsurprisingly, are expected to cement Vladimir Putin’s power until at least 2030, was announced in a press release from prison authorities without giving too much detail about the circumstances. A common scenario for those who worry about the Russian regime, as recently demonstrated by the disappearance of the plane of former Wagner head Yevgeny Prigozhin.
