Cancer of Charles III: the king personally received the prime minister at his weekly audience

King Charles III received British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in person for his weekly audience at Buckingham Palace for the first time since the announcement of the cancer the 75-year-old sovereign is suffering from, according to images broadcast by British television. During the meeting, the head of government was delighted to see the king “so good,” assuring him: “The whole country is behind you.”

Charles, for his part, spoke of the “wonderful” messages of support he has received since announcing his illness on February 5, admitting the demonstrations brought “tears” to his eyes. The king also took part on Wednesday afternoon in the Privy Council, the body responsible for advising the monarch. The king recently appeared at a Sunday service in Sandringham, eastern England.

Charles III will retire from public life

Less than 18 months after ascending the throne, the sovereign began treatment for an unspecified form of cancer earlier this month. We know that the disease was discovered during a recent operation for benign prostatic hypertrophy, but it is not prostate cancer. Rishi Sunak said the disease was detected “early”.

If he continues to carry out some of his administrative duties, he will be absent from public life indefinitely, the palace said. In a message of thanks about ten days ago, the king was pleased to see that the revelation of his illness had “helped raise awareness among the wider public and highlight the work of all these organizations that support cancer patients and their families across the UK and the rest of the world. »
