War in Ukraine: Zelensky “never asked” for reinforcement of foreign troops, Macron reminds in Washington

From Prague, Emmanuel Macron, criticizing the “spirit of defeat,” urged Ukraine’s allies on Tuesday to “not be cowardly” by “taking responsibility” for his comments about possibly sending Western troops on the ground in the face of an “unstoppable” Russia. The warning was not appreciated by Berlin. And it wasn’t Washington.

Asked about the French president’s comments, John Kirby, a US spokesman for the National Security Council, responded: “This is not what President Zelensky is asking for. This requires tools and capabilities. He never asked foreign troops to fight for his country.” And confirm: “There will be no American troops in Ukraine. »

On the issue of sending troops, the vast majority of Western countries have already made it clear that they do not consider such a scenario at all. NATO has “no plans” to send combat troops to Ukraine, an Alliance spokesman commented at the time.

“We don’t need (…) discussions about having more or less courage,” German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius reacted on Tuesday. “It doesn’t really help solve the problems” of Ukraine. The French President assured that Berlin is not under special attack after a number of recent tense relations over the Ukrainian issue. “It targets everyone,” he said.
