ASS, sabotage… why Tesla’s ‘gigafactory’ near Berlin is fueling tensions

Tesla’s Gigafactory southeast of Berlin, Germany, has been the target of several protests in recent weeks. On Tuesday, sabotage claimed by the small far-left group Vulkangruppe forced the US car manufacturer to cease operations at its European plant. Activists claim responsibility for the arson, which knocked out a power pole near the site. Tesla is “eating land, resources, people, labor and spitting out 6,000 SUVs, killing machines and monster trucks a week,” the small far-left group denounced in a press release.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk, whom activists call a “technofascist,” criticized the production stop, the damage from which is estimated at several hundred million euros. “They are either the stupidest eco-terrorists on the planet or puppets of those with no good environmental goals,” he said on X (formerly Twitter). Brandenburg State Minister-President Dietmar Woidke (a Social Democrat) condemned “a form of terrorism” in the Süddeutsche Zeitung, a daily newspaper in the south of the country cited by Courrier International.
