Germany recommends its citizens to “urgently avoid” trips to Russia

The German Foreign Ministry has strengthened its travel recommendations for Russia and now “urgently” advises its citizens to avoid traveling to that country.

The Ministry warns on its website that in Russia German citizens and those with dual Russian and German nationality face the risk of “arbitrary detention”.

“In the course of unauthorized protests and demonstrations across the country, massive and partially violent actions by security forces may occur, including arrests. It cannot be ruled out that pedestrians passing nearby could be affected,” the Ministry said.

Until now, citizens were only asked to avoid traveling to Russia.

The addition of the “urgently” qualifier comes after this week Moscow declared the German Friedrich Ebert Foundation (FES) and the German Society for East European Sciences (DGO) undesirable.

“(Vladímir) Putin is increasingly isolating Russia and wants to avoid exchanges at the level of civil society”, said the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs this Wednesday on the social network X in reaction to this step.

The institution condemned the measure and stated that it amounts to a “de facto ban” on these organizations.
