Milei, at the center of the controversy over the increase in his salary and that of members of the Executive

The president of Argentina, Javier Milei, was involved this Saturday in a strong controversy after a salary increase for members of the Executive became known amid the socioeconomic crisis that the country is going through and its policy of adjusting public coffers.

According to decree 206/24, of February 29, signed by the president and his chief of staff, Nicolás Posse, all senior executive officials should receive a salary increase in several areas that, in total, would reach 48% .

The publication of this decree, which went unnoticed, was announced this Saturday by Peronist deputy Victoria Tolosa Paz in the context of the recent discussion in Parliament for an increase in subsidies for legislators, proposed by the presidents of both chambers, Martín Menem (Deputies) and Victoria Villarruel (Senate), which was interrupted by Milei with her ‘anti-caste’ speech.

Subsequently, the president used his usual communication channel, social media, to blame a decree signed in 2010 by then president Cristina Fernández (2007-2015) that forced him to grant “an automatic increase to the political framework of this Government”.

“Obviously we are going to revoke this decree and reverse any increase that the political plant has noticed. In a time of crisis like the current one, when Argentine society is making a heroic effort, politicians have to be the first to help,” wrote Milei on her account on the social network X.

However, both Fernández and former Peronist president Alberto Fernández (2019-2023) jumped into the virtual agora to respond to the leader of La Libertad Avanza (far right), showing him the two documents – that of the former vice president and the one recently signed by Milei – and ask if he doesn’t sign the documentation that appears with his name.

“Oh, president… you want to fight me so we don’t talk about the decree you signed giving a 48% raise to you and your employees while destroying the pensions and salaries of Argentines… and Argentine women too. Admit that you signed, you were paid and they caught you (…) I want to think that you read what you signed, right? In January it did not expressly include the authorities and in February it included you and your employees”, replied Cristina Fernández.

Argentina is experiencing a serious socioeconomic crisis, with inflation exceeding 250%, more than half of the population in poverty, and the policy defended by Milei and his Executive is marked by fiscal adjustment.
