Land reclaimed by lava from the sea on the Spanish island of The Palm, the so-called lava delta (“fajana”), runs the risk of collapsing, if it continues its advance to greater depths in the ocean, which would be accompanied by the sudden release of gases, with hydromagmatic explosions and waves.

This Friday, eyes are focused on seeing the evolution of the delta, since it has reached the limit of the island platform and it is foreseeable that it will continue its advance, which could lead to the collapse of its front, according to experts.

AIR QUALITY REMAINS “REGULAR”

For a few days, the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano, which began on September 19, has been in a stable phase or “valley”, since there are no significant patterns in the deformations, daily emissions of sulfur dioxide reach 4,994 tons and the diffuse emission of carbon dioxide is 1,668 tons per day, values similar to previous days.

Among the parameters that are monitored around volcanic activity, two are the focus of attention this Friday: air quality, which remains “regular”, according to the Canary Islands Volcanic Emergency Plan (Pevolca), and seismicity,

Regarding air quality, the weather conditions are unfavorable, although the situation is expected to improve as of Saturday with the north wind turning between 1,500 and 5,000 meters and a rise in thermal inversion, now stagnant at 700 meters .

In the Aridane Valley, where there have been some specific measurements that have exceeded the sulfur dioxide alert levels and that have later subsided, the neighbors can lead a normal life, but with a mask, and it is only recommended to go out as little as possible when outside and always with a FFP2 mask for those who suffer from lung or bronchial conditions, asthma, heart problems, pregnant women and young children.

Those sulfur dioxide peaks have been specific in El Paso and Los Llanos de Aridane, since they only occurred during this last morning and the rest of the day the values were normal.

In addition, the ash and sulfur dioxide plume that spreads from the volcano is affecting the operation not only of La Palma airport, but also of one of the two that has another of the islands of this Spanish archipelago, Tenerife ( the North), without ruling out that it reaches the second of this island and also that of La Gomera.

ALMOST TWO HUNDRED EARTHQUAKES IN TWO DAYS

Seismicity has continued to increase in number and intensity, always at a depth greater than 10 kilometers, which makes the possibility of a new eruptive center far from the main cone “extremely rare” at the moment, according to the experts.

Specifically, the Spanish National Geographic Institute (IGN) has located 180 earthquakes in the area affected by the volcanic reactivation since 10.00 GMT on October 6, of which 56 have been felt by the population.

The largest earthquake (4.3) took place on Thursday at a depth of 35 kilometers.

The lava already covers an area of 471.8 hectares, 40.6 hectares more than on Thursday, after a fork occurred near the coast, southwest of the main stream, an appendix that is about 150 meters from the sea.

It is not ruled out that the main stream ends up covering the surface that separates it from that appendix, since on its way it is filling gaps and looking for heads of small basins.

Among the areas affected by the lava there are 102 hectares of cultivation, mostly (59.39) of banana trees, and the kilometers of road covered by the lava amount to 26.47, while there is no data on the destroyed buildings, more than 700 according to previous measurements.

LAVA CONTINUES TO RAISE IN ITS PASS

Since the volcano erupted on September 19, the lava has already affected an area of 431.2 hectares (9.27 hectares more than the day before), in its wake it has devastated homes and crops and has buried 26, 47 kilometers of roads, all of which have forced the evacuation of some 6,000 people.

The height of the gas and ash column reaches 3,200 meters and the emission of sulfur dioxide continues at high values, with 13,100 tons per day, while the diffuse emission of carbon dioxide in the area is 1,596 tons per day.

At the same time, the magma continues to gain ground from the sea: the lava delta, the so-called “fajana”, grows in a north-south direction, and is 500 meters away from the coast and has a depth of 250 meters.

The situation of the volcano is closely followed by all the institutions (central, Canary Island and the island of La Palma) and today King Felipe VI held a videoconference with local authorities and those responsible for the Volcanic Emergency Plan of the Canary Islands (Pevolca) to be interested in the development of the eruption and the emergency operation.

And it is that, in the words of the regional president of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, it is one of “the most difficult moments in history” of this archipelago, a safe destination for tourism, including the island of La Palma, he assured.
