The president of Argentina, Javier Mileicanceled salary increases for his cabinet of ministers that generated controversy in which the former president participated. Cristina Kirchner (2007-2015), to whom, in response, the extreme right challenged this Sunday to annul his privileged reform.

I just canceled salary increases for the entire national cabinet. Since I saw you so worried about retirement What do you think if I cancel the US$14,000,000 (pesos, about 16,000 dollars) that you receive as a privileged pension and assign you a minimum pension? I estimate (that) you will not complain“Milei said in a message from network X to Fernández.

Milei became involved in controversy on Saturday after it became known that there had been a salary increase for members of the Executive, including the president, amid the socioeconomic crisis that the country is going through and its policy of adjusting public coffers, and which was taken advantage of by the Peronist opposition.

The Executive finally annulled the salary increase approved by decree 206/2024, which on February 29 had been signed by the president and his chief of staff, Nicolas Posseall senior executive officials would receive a salary increase across several headings that, in total, would reach 48%.

Milei also revoked the regulation signed in 2010 by the then president Cristina Kirchnerwhat “linked raises for national public administration workers to civil servant salaries“, a measure that, according to the current Executive, “It was designed and executed with the aim of protecting the pockets of the caste”.

Cristina Kirchner replied: “Oh president… you want to fight me so we don’t talk about the decree you signed giving a 48% raise to you and your employees while destroying the pensions and salaries of Argentines… and Argentine women too. Admit that you signed, you were paid and they caught you (…) I want to think that you read what you signed, right?”.

In response, this Sunday Javier Milei and her followers on social media confront the former vice president (2019-2023) about the privileged retirement she receives for having been president and the pension for being the widow of the former president. Nestor Kirchner (2003-2007), a double benefit that opposition leaders consider illegal.

Argentina is experiencing a serious socioeconomic crisis, with inflation exceeding 250%, more than half of the population living in poverty and the policy defended by Milei and his Executive, which this Sunday completes three months in office since December 10th, is marked by fiscal adjustment difficulties.
