US presidential election 2024: Trump promises to release Capitol rioters if he wins

This will undoubtedly please his voters. Former US President Donald Trump promised this Monday to release prisoners for participating in the storming of the Capitol in 2021, as soon as he returns to power, if he wins the presidential election in November. “My first actions as the next President will be to close the border (…) and release the hostages wrongly imprisoned on January 6th! – the former American president wrote on Monday evening on his social network Pravda, without providing details.

Donald Trump has raised the prospect of his possible return to the White House in the past, promising during a television appearance in December not to act like a dictator except on his “first day.”

“Free the hostages”

In January, while campaigning in Iowa (North), the billionaire called on Democratic President Joe Biden to “free the hostages,” a term he regularly uses to describe people jailed for their roles in the attack on the temple of American democracy. . Rioters, emboldened by Donald Trump and false claims of election fraud, invaded the Capitol on January 6, 2021, to try to prevent the transfer of power to Joe Biden.

Some 1,358 people have been charged since then, according to the latest Justice Department data released last week. About 500 people were sentenced to prison.

Donald Trump is the target of four criminal cases, including two for attempting to overturn the 2020 presidential election results in his favor following his loss to Joe Biden. The former president is all but assured of winning the Republican nomination in the presidential election after his last challenger, Nikki Haley, bowed out on Wednesday.
