Netanyahu condemns US elected official’s ‘totally inappropriate’ call to hold elections in Israel

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday condemned the US Senate Democratic Majority Leader’s call for new elections in Israel, calling it “completely inappropriate” in an interview with CNN.

“We are not a banana republic,” he said, while President Joe Biden on Friday praised the “good speech” Chuck Schumer gave the day before. This senior Jewish legislator specifically called Benjamin Netanyahu “an obstacle to peace.”

“Elections will stop the war”

Members of the “international community” calling for elections “are doing so because they know that elections will stop the war and paralyze the country for at least six months,” Israel’s prime minister was quoted as saying on Sunday by his services.

“If we stop the war now (…), Israel will lose the war. We won’t allow this. That is why we will not give in to this pressure,” he continued, accusing the international community of “forgetting October 7 so quickly.”
