Man who killed ex-girlfriend in the US will be executed in Georgia

A man who kidnapped, raped and killed his ex-girlfriend in 1993 in U.S will be executed this Wednesday in the state of Georgia (south) by lethal injection.

The execution of Willie PyeThe arrest, the first in that state in four years, will take place at the Jackson prison after a request for clemency was rejected on Tuesday in a last-minute appeal to justice.

The man, a 59-year-old African-American, was sentenced to death in 1996 for the crime of Alicia Yarbrougha woman with whom he had sporadic relationships and who he kidnapped and raped together with two accomplices.

The sentence was annulled in 2021 by a court of second instance which considered that he did not have a good public defense, as his lawyer did not claim that he showed signs of Intellectual disability, nor did he mention his childhood amid poverty and abuse. But the death sentence was imposed again in 2022.

If carried out, it will be the third execution carried out this year in U.S.

Capital punishment has been abolished in 23 states. U.S and in six others –Arizona, California, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania and Tennessee– was suspended.

However, last year there were 24 executions, most of them for lethal injection.
